An evening of solidarity with political prisoners in Turkey
Grup Yorum is a Turkish music group founded in 1985. Yorum means comment in Turkish.
Grup Yorum is a group that stands out for its socially committed lyrics: it has released nineteen albums since 1985, while many of its members have been arrested and tortured.
Some of their concerts have been banned, as well as their albums, but Yorum’s popularity grows and their albums continue to sell. Over the course of 20 years Yorum has performed in Germany, Austria, Australia, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, England and Greece.
While the Turkish government is now applying genuine genocide and ethnic cleansing (replacing the population in northern Syria) to the Kurds, similarly a harsh repression has been unleashed against young people, workers, journalists, writers, lawyers and Turkish dissidents.
Arrests, detentions and torture are certainly nothing new for the Turkish music group (which expresses a “leftist folk”, apparently inspired by Chilean Inti Illimani).
Present at the demonstrations against the regime of students, workers, miners, farmers, always alongside all oppressed peoples, the members of Grup Yorum have suffered censorship, repression, jail and torture for a total of over 400 (four hundred!) trials. And I remember that we are talking about a musical group, not an armed band.
However, unbreakable as the people, Grup Yorum continues to exist, to fight as an “instrument of collective consciousness” of the oppressed, exploited, humiliated and offended. Voice of resistance and hope. Voice of those who continue to raise their heads, despite everything.
Many of its members are still on death fast or until Erdogan’s regime recognizes their rights.
Together we will try to reconstruct the latest events, in solidarity with their struggle.
